If so, there is an effective solution to your problem. It’s a common problem. For no apparent reason, your radio or cd player stops working, and you go out to buy a new one, but how do you know what to look for when purchasing a car CD player?
Luckily, that’s not the case here, as it’s effortless to diagnose the problem. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to troubleshoot a faulty car stereo.
How do I test a stereo with no sound? Your first step is to determine if the radio is silent or if it’s just not very loud. If you can hear faint audio from the speakers, but it’s so quiet that you have trouble hearing it over ambient noise, one of the following conditions may apply.
The volume on the radio is turned way down. Most car radios have a knob that controls volume, and some also have a button you can press to mute the sound completely. If that applies to your radio, make sure that neither of those functions is in use.
The stereo is set to a low-output audio source.
Some cars have auxiliary ports that allow you to connect an external device, like an MP3 player or smartphone. The problem with these ports is that they’re usually located on the stereo itself and aren’t designed for frequent use.
Instead, they’re intended for temporary connections, like when you need to transmit navigation instructions from your phone to your car’s speakers. So, when you’re done using one of these ports, it’s easy to forget to switch back to a different audio source — like AM/FM radio or CDs — when you’re done using it.
That can result in meager sound output (or none) when you turn off your car.
Possible causes of radio Making no sound
There are several reasons why your car radio won’t produce any sound. The first thing to rule out is whether your radio is on.
If it isn’t, you need to check the obvious causes, such as blown fuses, disconnected wiring, and disconnected speakers. You may find that something needs to be replaced, or you may need to take it in for service.
There are several do-it-yourself fixes that you can try before taking it in for repairs. I can’t believe we have to add this as our first cause but;
Check your mute settings. Some cars have a mute button on their steering wheel. You might think your radio is broken if you press it by accident.
Make sure the mute button isn’t encouraged. Check the volume and balance levels. You’ve turned down the volume or changed the balance so that only one side of your car has sound.
Pressing “up” on the volume control should fix this, but if you want to make sure you’ve got a good balance on both sides of your car, go into your stereo system’s menu and manually set the equalizer levels to their defaults — or turn up the volume so loud that no one can hear what they’re saying anyway.
If the radio has power and you can turn it on, there are two possible reasons why it has no sound. It’s either a speaker or an amplifier problem.
If all of your speakers are not working, an amplifier problem needs to be fixed. But if only one Speaker is not working, then this could also mean a problem with the Speaker or something else in the system causing this issue.
Testing the speakers
- Get a basic multimeter and test the speakers for resistance.
- You don’t have to be an electrical engineer to use a multimeter. It’s easy.
- The left is positive, and the right is negative.
- The meter should be 200ohms or higher, and you should get a reading from one of the speaker wires.
The ohm scale will go to this number and back down. If it goes to zero and then back up, there is no resistance in the Speaker, and it has gone wrong.
That could be one of many things like a wire being cut or just bad speakers. If you get a reading, your speakers work, but you may have lost audio out due to either the fuse or head unit connector being loose, dirty, or corroded.
One of the first things you should do when discovering that your car radio has no sound is to check the fuse.
The fuse can blow out if there are problems with some of the electrical wiring in your vehicle. You can find the fuse box by opening your door and examining the panel on the side of your dashboard.
The inside of the lid should show which fuses go with which components. Replace any blown fuses and see if this fixes the issue with your radio-producing sound.
If your car radio turns on, but no sound comes out, the problem could be several different things.
One common issue is that the wire harness has come disconnected. The wire harness connects the speakers to the electrical system and can become loose or worn over time.
In this case, you should check to see if the sound is coming from only one Speaker or none.
If it’s just one Speaker, the problem is likely a faulty speaker. If the sound isn’t coming from any of them, it’s more likely that something in your wiring has loosened up.
Inspect the Speaker Wires and, if bad, replace them
If the speaker wires are intact, then the issue could be one of two things. Either the radio unit itself is not working, or the speakers are not working.
To determine which is which, you need to connect your radio to an external speaker system.
If you hear sound when playing music, the problem is obviously with your speakers.
Otherwise, it’s time to take your car in for servicing because there might be an issue with your internal audio system.
Check if the head unit is getting power. If the radio does not turn on, you will need to check for power to the fuse and wiring to the radio.
It could be that the fuse has blown or there is no power to the radio. To do this, remove the radio from the dashboard and look at its back. There should be two wires coming out of it, one red and one yellow.
Connect a multimeter to these two wires and change it to DC voltage measurements. The meter should read between 11V and 15V when you turn on your car’s ignition. If you get zero volts, check to see if your fuse has blown or if there is no power coming into your fuse box.
If you have a car stereo that is turning on but has no sound, the problem could be caused by the antenna cable.
This can happen when the antenna cable is not fully plugged into the radio.
If this is the case, you will need to pull out the radio and check if your antenna cable is connected correctly and tight.
You may need to unscrew the radio from your dashboard and unplug it to get to the antenna cable. Or, if the antenna is broken, you can also fix that.
You can also try to reset the radio by disconnecting the battery and then reconnecting it again. You will have to wait for a few minutes after connecting the battery before turning on the radio again.
Unfortunately, there are a few different reasons that this problem occurs.
Fortunately, a few simple fixes will likely solve the issue for you, whether caused by the power cord or the FM modulator. If you’ve tried the solutions above, but your radio isn’t working correctly, we suggest trying another outlet and FM modulator.

How do you unmute a car radio?

- Keep on squeezing the capacity button until the phone shows up.
- Utilize the left or right fastens to choose ATT.
- Press and hold the source button until it stops once more.
This is a very common problem, and there are many reasons why it may be happening. Possible reasons why your car radio is on mute:
- The volume has been turned all the way down
- The mute button on the radio has been pressed
- The mute function on your steering wheel has been enabled on accident
- Your vehicle’s amplifier has gone bad
- Your speakers, speaker wires, or speaker connections are broken**
ATT is for attenuation, which lowers the level of the input signal.
It is used to match inputs that have different levels.
The output from a CD player is 2V (or 1V depending on the model), while the output from a tuner (even if it has a “pre-out”) is usually only 200mV.
The ATT switch lowers the level of the tuner so that it matches the CD player’s level to allow you to use one volume control for both inputs.
As far as I know, there is no reason not to leave it on all the time.
It can be used to correct mismatched levels, but that should not be a problem in your case.
